The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
